The Western Reds (Perth) have made the first steps towards eventual readmission to the NRL competition – after being accepted by the ARL into the 2008 Jim Beam Cup tournament.

This is a massive step for the Western Reds and should remind all those on the eastern seaboard that there is a future for Rugby League in Western Australia.

After the collapse of the Western Reds during the Super League war – many of the WA playing talent was shipped to Melbourne; forming the new Storm club. The quality was there for all to see, the Storm going on to win the NRL competition in 1999.

As the glut of local clubs within NSW struggle to make a profit and continue to be competitive; the attraction of Perth should not be forgotten – with relocation a distinct advantage for Sydney based NRL clubs bold enough to explore it.
