NZ Warriors upcoming rookie Sonny Fai is currently missing, believed to have possibly drowned, after getting caught in a dangerous rip during training at Bethell’s Beach in Auckland, New Zealand, yesterday.
Speaking today – Sonny Fai’s agent, Frank Endacott, confirmed the situation where a training run on Bethell’s Beach was underway and apparently Sonny had gone into the water shortly after with 3 other people when they were troubled by strong rips.
The call for help went out at around 6pm NZ local time on Sunday, and 2 rescue boats were sent in; with the Westpac Rescue Helicopter on scene soon after the mayday call.
3 of the swimmers with Sonny Fai were rescued, but Fai still remains missing and the official search was abandoned at around 10pm yesterday evening.
However, family members, friends and surf life savers kept out until 1am and the helicopter soon resumed the search this morning.
On the rise for the Warriors club, NRL rookie Fai has played 15 games for the Warriors since making his NRL debut in March 2008.
He was named Warriors Under-20 player of the year in 2007, and was a Junior Kiwis player from 2004 to 2007.
