The Broncos needed a late flurry of points to fend off a gutsy Titans side, with Brisbane getting home 32-18 in front of a 40,000+ crowd at Suncorp Stadium last night.
Missing many of their stars, few thought the Titans could match it with the Broncos in the big local derby.
The Titans had a 12-8 lead going into half-time and the game remained close at 20-18 with nine minutes left before Brisbane no.7 Peter Wallace snuck over for the match winning try and then the untouchable Folau bagged his 4th touchdown just on the bell.
It was a high quality game, with Corey Parker setting the tone early for the Brisbane side. The veteran lock throwing a miraculous flick pass as he was being dragged down in a tackle, finding Steve Michaels right on the try line to get a quality touchdown.
Broncos new recruit Israel Folau was dangerous with most touches, his 4 tries a massive haul in anyones language. One try for Folau in particular was in heavy traffic some 5m out from the line, he still managed to hit and spin, taking several Titans over with him.
Folau rotated between wing and centre with Justin Hodges not playing and always seemed to be in right place at the right time.
For the Titans, it wasn’t all bad news. Youngster Kevin Gordon continues to impress, the talented speedster scoring an early try around Karmichael Hunt to make the representative fullback look very ordinary. Gordon showing speed, and a beautiful in and away to leave Hunt clutching at air.
The Gold Coast also ran some impressive set plays, Luke O’Dwyer scoring off a classic setup, taking a shortball from 10m out to score untouched as the Brisbane defence took the dummy runner.
