Ricardo: NRL Team of the Week

July 2, 2009

1. Josh Dugan – The young live-wire fullback has really shown the League why he is a player of the future with a solid performance in the Raiders upset win. A strong ball-runner and very tough for his size.

2. Bryson Goodwin – The former Shark has turned his career around in a big way. Facing the sack for a misdemeanor, the Bulldogs threw him a life-line and he has grabbed it. Currently leads on the try scoring charts.

3. Joel Monaghan – Did his Origin credentials no harm despite a poor performance in Origin 2. Leapt high to score one try and leapt high again to set up another. Should start on the wing for NSW.

4. Adam McDougall – Despite his age, the Mad Dog hasn’t let this get in the way of playing good footy. Still as strong as he was – years ago, he is proving to be a handful for many teams and he set up a crucial try for the Knights.

5. Eric Grothe – The Guru is back! Dumped to the NSW Cup last year, Grothe has come back and is in scintillating form. He is proving too hot to handle and can push away defenders at ease. Scored a try and set one up for his centre Reddy.

6. Ben Roberts – A reformed man. On his last chance with the Doggies following previous incidents, his form has done a 360. Now a mainstay in the Bulldogs line-up, his combination with Kimmorley is proving to be a hit this season.

7. Mitchell Pearce – The youngster just keeps getting better and better. His kicking game is nearly flawless and he has very good awareness for his age. Based on current form, deserves another Origin jumper.

8. Matthew Scott – Has stepped up his game this year from unknown to Cowboys superstar with some strong performances over the year. Strong player with good speed and hard to tackle. Could be in QLD’s starting side due to injuries.

9. Nathan Friend – Perhaps one of the most under-rated players in the game, Friend consistently shows why he is such an asset to the Titans. Provided a beautiful inside ball to Laffranchi for the Titans first try and is a workhorse in defence.

10. Jarred Hickey – A huge huge man who is playing consistent footy for the Dogs. Very hard to tackle and provided the offload for Eastwood to score a try.

11. Steve Simpson – Played his 200th game like his first. Strong ball running and 100% commitment. A terrific player and was rewarded with a try in his 200th.

12. Nathan Hindmarsh – Proved once again that he deserves an Origin jumper with a commanding performance in the Eels upset win over Brisbane. Made a whopping 47 tackles and 167 metres. A true champion of the game.

13. Ben Creagh – The red-head is one of the in-form players in the League right now. His versatility in both attack and defence proves to be a matchwinner in the Dragons quest for glory.

14. Joel Reddy – The son of Rod ‘Rocket’ Reddy is on fire. Linked with Eric Grothe for two very good tries down the right hand side and this combination should continue.

15. Darren Mead – The Titans speedster showed just how fast he is with an intercept try in the Titans win. A very good prospect for the future.

16. Jonathon Thurston – Backing up from Origin, he did it again. He was everywhere in attack and defence for the Cowboys and its no wonder he is regarded as the best player in the game.

17. Blake Ferguson – The Sharks youngster has a great future ahead of him and is showing that he belongs in the NRL. Very good future prospect.
