Super Soward beats Roosters 36-12

July 4, 2009

Jamie Soward drove the stake right into the heart  of his former side the Roosters, scoring a double and kicking to perfection as he guided around the Saints and took them to the top of the NRL Ladder with their 36-12 win.

After weathering an early fight from the Roosters, the Dragons seemed to love the faster tempo and eventually the last placed Sydney side just couldn’t go with them.

Even at half time, with the Roosters leading 12-6 – few could believe the last placed Bondi men could keep going on with it. The Dragons were always going to burst out of their shackles.

Veteran forward Craig Fitzgibbon was at his vintage best, scoring a double in the first term and driving his team forward with passionate hit-ups.

But their good work was crushed only minutes into the second term, when form half Ben Hornby sent up a bomb that Soward gobbled up over Perrett and touched down under the posts. The early try immediately withdrew the juice from the Roosters and set the scene for a late carve up

While the Roosters defended stoutly, the roll on by the Dragons allowed Hornby and Soward to really work up some magic. Their extra time had the Saints Illawarra outside backs lining up for tries.

Young forward Matt Prior continues to impress for the Dragons, showing consistent form this year apart from the usual suspects, Morris, Soward and Hornby.

But the big wraps will be headed Wayne Bennetts way if this side wins the comp. Title-less for seemingly forever, Bennett has walked in and turned this side into a killer monster. If they take the prize, then Bennett will immediately be crowned the ultimate king of NRL coaching bar none.
