Solid Tigers shut out Eels
March 27, 2010
The Wests Tigers mixed their usual exciting attack with some solid, enthusiastic defence tonight to defeat the Parramatta Eels 23-12.
The Tigers started with plenty of possession, but while they had all the ball they could only rack up 8 points from two tries in the first period.
There was a late first half Benji field goal for good measure, but there was a feeling that if they Eels got any ball they could make a run at the Wests lead.
Sheens had the Tigers extremely up for this game, the consistent rushing defence was frustrating the life out of the Eels – who again looked flat and a little disorganised.
But as they did last week, the Eels warmed to the task late in the piece.
Midway through the second half, Parramatta got some ball and got some momentum. Jarryd Hayne was again at the centre of their charge, line busting and throwing quality passes to set up team-mates.
For the Tigers, their go-to guy Benji Marshall was at his absolute best.
Looking more like he was playing touch footy, Marshall was flick passing from inside his own red zone, running solo into tiny gaps near the sideline and getting out of jail and creating all out chaos for the Eels defence.
The Eels like early last year are struggling for cohesion and structure. Missing Mortimer tonight made things even more messy, while Kris Keating played well – the Eels lacked a strong leader to organise the attack.
Hayne is key and can generate points, but they need a halves general that can really control this team and get through the sets consistently and smartly.
For the Tigers, they looked great with Tim Moltzen in the halves.
Feeding of Benji’ energy – the team really looked better with the likes of Payten and Gibbs back on deck. They were turning the Eels forwards away and allowed Marshall to run proceedings.
Lote Tiquiri was again impressive, his touches were quality and he scored twice for the Tigers.
Wests face the Raiders in Canberra next week and the Eels travel to Cronulla to meet the Sharks.
Predictions NRL Round 3
March 26, 2010
Round 3 of the NRL kicks off tomorrow, and Scrappy Coco discusses who will win and why:
Wests Tigers $2.40 vs Eels $1.45
These two teams gave us a belter of game late last season, the Benji Marshall vs Jarryd Hayne billing is certainly a highly anticipated one. Both these guys can generate some amazing footy and rarely fail to deliver in these big matches.
However, at the moment both these teams are struggling with new players and cohesion in their ranks.
The Tigers defence is a concern, but so is the Eels organisation in attack at the moment.
Expect it to be a high scoring game, but to pick out a winner you need to look at the statistics. The Tigers really struggle against the Eels and have only won 1 of their past 4 meetings.
Eels in a close one.
Dragons $1.30 vs Cowboys $3.40
The Saints are short priced favourites with the bookies here, amazingly the Cowboys are $3.40 in a two horse race and virtually friendless.
The precision of the Dragons in 2010 has been outstanding. Their completion rates are scary and they are doing everything right.
The Cowboys are still trying to develop their mojo and were lucky to get out of jail against Penrith last week.
Dragons at home should be too much for the stuttering Cowboys.
Penrith $2.10 vs Melbourne Storm $1.70
This is a real test for both sides early in 2010. The Panthers are showing promise with their new look side, but couldn’t close it out in Cowboy town last week after leading by a bunch at halftime.
The Storm have been patchy, but escaped losses in both their games.
No Travis Burns for the Panthers is a concern, the new recruit has been a nice addition to the Penrith side and his presence has certainly helped.
While this games at CUA Stadium, Penrith without Burns and niggling injuries to Lewis and others paints a worrying picture.
Melbourne might have a reshuffled lineup without Cronk – but know how to win these games.
Storm to win.
Manly $1.60 vs Newcastle $2.30
Expect a fired up Manly side here. They’ve been rundown twice now and Dessy the Doorslammer might tear down a grandstands if they lose this.
Newcastle have been very solid given they’ve been without boom player Kurt Gidley – however, their powerful and super fast backs are possibly league best.
However, having the Manly home game at Gosford helps the Newcastle boys.
Manly might be high on emotion for this game and are favourites with bookies, but lookout for the Newcastle backs to really run riot if given a chance in this one. Some value in the Newcastle bet to win here.
Newcastle to win.
Titans $1.76 v Raiders$3.25
The machine that is the Gold Coast Titans should continue their run here at Skilled Park. They have quickly turned Skilled into a Graveyard much like Melbourne did with Olympic.
The Raiders showed glimpses of what they can do, but this road trip won’t be a happy one for them.
Stick with the Gold Coast in this one.
Brisbane $1.45 vs Warriors $2.65
Both sides are in a form of rebuilding and don’t boast the firepower of yesteryear.
The Broncos however are a bit more stable at home and the fact that this game is in Brisbane tips the scales in their favour.
The NZ side are playing an attractive, at times unpredictable brand of footy. It will be interesting to see if they can keep their uptempo game going.
Stay with the Broncos at home in this game.
Bulldogs $1.85 vs Sydney Roosters $1.95
The bookies cannot split these sides and the re-emerging Roosters are real chances in this big clash with the Bulldogs.
The Dogs look out of sorts at the moment, that might sound obvious as they’ve lost 2 games – but there is something missing.
The Hannant situation isn’t ideal and that might still be rubbing off on other players.
Ennis is back for the Belmore boys and this will help them somewhat.
The Roosters are really starting to believe and have some impressive attacking weapons with Carney onboard and Mini looking fitter than ever.
The Bulldogs aren’t in total disarray just yet, and I think it will take 1 more loss for them to panic.
So tip the Roosters here and ride their confidence.
Cronulla $2.10 vs Souths $1.70
The battle of the strugglers. While at Shark Park, look to the Rabbits here. The Sharkies still cannot score point and their defence has weakened.
Bunnies will be super keen to notch one up here.
Could be high scoring, for Souths that is.
Bunnies to win.
Bad Look for Dumb Des
March 25, 2010
There might be a broken door at Parramatta Stadium and now a controversy over television cameras in dressing rooms, but what about Des Hasler’s methods?
There is passion and there is down right stupidity.
Many coaches walk a fine line between the two, namely Ricky Stuart who has punched the odd hole in the coaching box wall or even John Lang whos trashed the odd headset or two.
Even the usually poker faced Brian Smith has had the odd hissy fit and lost control in full view of the television cameras.
There is no question that the pressure on NRL coaches is huge. The players have a greater influence over the result, however the coach can only do so much.
But the tantrum thrown by Des Hasler really doesn’t help him or his team at all.
If the team was down at halftime and needed a real rocket up them, then there might be some understanding around his mindless methods.
But to carry on like a pork chop after the loss and tear a door off the hinges, when it would have no bearing on the game is just a joke.
How can he expect his players to look up to him when he carries on like this?
It might only be Round 2, but things don’t look good over at Manly – and I’m not just talking about their 0 from 2 start.
They’ve lost a lot of talent in the past 2 seasons, the likes of Menzies, Orford, Hall, Cuthbertson, L’estrange and Bryant just to name a few.
Now with injury and court dramas looming large over they key man Brett Stewart, he’ll be missing for months – they are really hurting.
Throw in some rookies, the likes of Foran and Hodkinson who are talented but very green and it makes for a tough year for the men from Brookie.
They’ve run up some good starts against the Tigers and Eels, but have fallen short when the blow torch was applied.
This is why Des Hasler needs to suck it up and lead the squad through this tough time.
There is no questioning his ability, Dessie must have done something right in the past – getting the Sea Eagles to a glorious Grand Final win in 2008.
But now the chips are down, ripping doors of their hinges and carrying on like a 2 year old after the game was already lost aint going to achieve much except losing the respect of his players.
Ricky Ricardo: NRL Team of Week
March 24, 2010
Ricky Ricardo lists his chargers for the NRL Team of the Week Round 2 -
Fullback – Jarryd Hayne: All of the words to describe this man’s talent have already been exhausted. Coach Daniel Anderson’s reaction said it all ‘amazing, unbelievable’. Took it upon himself to inject himself at the right time and did so with catastrophic destruction as seen in his part in the Eels 109m try which is already a contender for try of the year. Could this be a surge similar to that of last year for Hayne?
Winger – Brett Morris: Looks like the Dragons brother is currently winning the bet between his brother. Apparently, the one who scores the most tries gets a case of beer from the other. Not a bad incentive hey? Far too skilful for a weak and slow Bulldogs backline, and used his pace and awareness to get over the line on three occasions. Get your money on him for leading try scorer.
Centre – Israel Folau: The giant is back baby!! After suffering a severe injury at the back of last season, and with a full pre-season under his belt, Folau is reaping the benefits. He was perhaps one of the Broncos best players in their loss to the Raiders getting on the score sheet twice and showing off his brute strength in both attack and defence.
Centre – Phil Graham: For a man that has struggled with career-threatening injuries in the past, he’s doing a fantastic job to retain his place at the Roosters. He scored two tries on the weekend in the Roosters win over the Tigers, and will be looking to bag many more on the back of great play from the Roosters halves.
Winger: Manu Vatuvei: The man dubbed as ‘The Beast’ is quite simply unstoppable right now. Leads the try scoring list with 5 tries in just two rounds, which is a fantastic record. Whether it’s in the air, or close to the line, ‘The Beast’ just has too much strength and skill for his opponents and he has shown it with his current career best form. With a firing Manu, and good support from the halves and forwards, the Warriors could find themselves in the 8.
Five-Eighth: Due to McCrone’s strong game, I’ve had to put JT at five-eighth. JT single-handedly orchestrated a fantastic comeback for the Cowboys in their win over the Panthers. With his skill, vision, creativity and quickness of the mark, he confused and bedazzled the Panthers defence in the second half with a tremendous showing of skill in both kicking and passing. Thurston is currently the best half in the competition, perhaps even the world, and he’s showing why.
Halfback: – Josh McCrone: For a man thrust into a Raiders side purely because of Herbert’s poor form, my word didn’t he show that he belongs in the halfback spot. Scoring two tries of his own, and having a hand in the others, he really took control and showed why he deserves to be in the starting side for Canberra. If he can keep it up, he and Campese may prove to be a valuable halves combination.
Prop – Fui Fui Moi Moi: What can you possibly say about the Tongan apart from barnstorming, earth-shattering, mind-boggling etc. Moi Moi is perhaps the most devastating front-rower in the game given that he is hard to tackle, has tremendous upper and lower body strength, and legs the size of tree trunks that move as quick as Flash Gordon. Incredible player to watch and he showed his worth to the Eels side with a try that got them back into the game.
Hooker- Luke Priddis: In what may be his last year as an NRL footballer, Priddis was given the chance to show his talents once more following the injury to Nathan Fien and he did just that. Despite his age, he doesn’t appear to have lost any quickness out of dummy half and provided great service for the forwards and set the platform to gain quick and easy metres. He’s also very close to reaching an elusive club.
Prop – Michael Weyman: Without a doubt, he’s in career best form and he showed the NRL world again why he is currently NSW’s best prop with a dominant display against a weaker Bulldogs side. Made good metres on each carry and is a handful to bring down at full speed. Most likely will be the first prop picked for NSW.
Second Row – Aiden Guerra: One of the more inspiring stories in the NRL. A man who whilst at the Melbourne Storm suffered long-term injuries time and time again, and as a result was let go, much to the annoyance of Craig Bellamy. Under Brian Smith at the Roosters, Guerra has been re-born and showcasing the talents that had him touted as a future star in the NRL in his mid teens. Fantastic player, and he only looks like getting better. Bagged two tries on the weekend as well.
Second Row – Mark Flanagan: Looks like the Tigers have a knack for recruiting strong and mobile English recruits and Mark Flanagan is no exception to that. Given more game time in their loss to the Roosters, he showed exactly what he’s capable of with perhaps one of the best performances of the year so far by any forward. Strong in defence, mobile in attack, he seems to be a player of the future and one the Tigers may rely on in the later stages of the season.
Lock- Scott Bolton: Mainly a second-rower who can also play lock, the under-rated forward had perhaps one of his best games of his career. Scoring twice, which is virtually unheard of for second-rowers these days, he proved too much to handle for the Panthers in the second half. He’s come a long way since debuting and he is only going to get even better.
Reserve 1 – Benji Marshall: Once again, we saw some Benji magic, but once again, it’s never enough. Quite simply, Benji is a one-man show for the Tigers. Without him, they seem to crumble. With him, they just don’t give him the support that he needs. This was evident in their loss. For every amazing thing Marshall does or pulls off, there’s a dropped ball later on in the set. One of the most exciting players in the modern game to watch.
Reserve 2- Josh Perry: Although he didn’t have a great game in the Sea Eagles loss to the Eels, I think Perry deserves some recognition for not giving up the chase when Hayne made the break that led to their 109m try. For a front-row forward to make an effort like that is incredible and he deserves to be commended for it.
Reserve 3 – Scott Prince: Widely regarded as the under-study to JT for both QLD and Australia, Prince showed how much he means to the Titans side, by slotting home a field goal in golden point to give the Titans the win. Surely it’s only a matter of time before Scott Prince gets a chance to show what he can do in Origin.
Reserve 4 – Beau Champion: Scored two tries in the Bunnies narrow loss to the Titans and has come a long way over the last few years. Get your money on him for the Bunnies leading try scorer.
Player of the Week: Tie between Jarryd Hayne and Jonathon Thurston

NRL Round 2 Update
March 22, 2010
With only a game remaining in Round 2 tonight, the resurgence of the Sydney Roosters continues as does the precision of St George Illawarra;
Dragons 26 d Bulldogs 6
The Dragons were again very precise in their execution, they left nothing for the Dogs as they went about dismantling their arch enemy from 2009. Backed by a strong WIN Stadium crowd, it was again a reborn Ben Hornby combining with Jamie Soward to put Canterbury to the sword. Last year it was mostly Soward doing the damage, but Hornby has certainly stepped up and the dual pronged attack is working wonders. Aided by a lifting Saints forward pack, the red and white backs did their thing and the form of Nightingale continues to impress after he has grabbed his shot with both hands.
The Dogs were flustered and simply gave up too much ball, they weren’t helped by Noddy having a seriously off night and talk of Ben Hannant wanting out of his contract isn’t doing the harmony factor at the club any favours. Were left licking their wounds on Steve Turners edge, as the former Melbourne flanker struggled with a big workload in defence in an area other teams will surely target.
Titans 19 d Souths 18
Heartbreak again for the Bunnies, however they should really have been further ahead in this game. Souths were slightly the better team for most of the match, but didn’t capitalise by enough points when they had the chance. The Titans played ugly yet again, but were in the mix in the final minutes and their golden point win is a handy one away from home.
The Rabbits were given good service by their forwards, Sam Burgess is a little reckless with his offloads but most of them came off – so his coach won’t complain too much just yet, but the risk was there. It seems the Bunnies are being let down by very little control in their halves. Sutton and Sandow need to really steer this ship around but its not happening all the time.
For the Coast, their discipline was average in this clash – back to back penalties really hurt them. The referees did have a poor game and the sin binnings left many people scratching their heads. The Titans do have a good side this year, they’ve won both games even though they haven’t played great – when they gel, look out!
NZ Warriors 30 d Sharks 16
It was always going to be a tough roadtrip for the hapless Cronulla side, but they showed a glimpse of what they can do in the middle of this match after letting the Warriors jump out to a 16 point lead early. Good aggression from the Warriors allowed them to overpower the Sharks in this one, yet another aspect Ricky Stuart will need to work on with his struggling side. The loss is the 12th in a row for Cronulla and their confidence could be shot to bits before the season even gets rolling.
NZ lost Brett Seymour to injury which is a body blow for them despite the win, Seymour has been ruled out with a broken thumb and will miss their Broncos clash next week. Cronulla will be looking for some luck, as the side thats gone back to basics needs something more creative to a win a football game it seems. Stuart needs to really rethink how this side conducts themselves on the field, they used to rely on defence as they don’t score many points – but now their defence is flimsy, it could be open season.
Storm 20 d Knights 14
Heartache at Newcastle. The Knights were the better side for most of this match and deserved a win. The Storm again got out of jail, aided and abetted by Brett Finch who guided the Melbourne side well in attack and setup the final try with his linebreak and nice assist to Nielsen for the match winner.
There has been a lot to like about the Knights forwards this year, they again had bucketloads of enthusiasm and allowed their speedy, well built edge men to perform their magic. Uate and Vuna are lethal weapons and proved so for the Knights against the Storm.
But even with their spareparts team and no Cronk in sight, the Melbourne side just hung in. They weren’t brilliant and Slater or Inglis rarely got into top gear, but they did enough to stay with the Knights and be close enough to pounce.
Cowboy 28 d Penrith 20
Wille Mason calls North Queensland home. Coming off the bench, Big Willie inspired a huge comeback for the home side after they were sent packing in the first half by some enterprising Penrith play. Down 14-0 at the break, the Cowboys look in trouble with wet conditions making scoring tough in the tropics.
Jonathan Thurston was again strong for his side, but Ty Williams was struggling at times at the back. The Cowboys would dearly love Matt Bowen on deck and are simply a different team with him available. Neil Henry was not only happy with Mason, but also with the way the other forwards lifted around him when he was sent into the action.
Penrith won’t be too down after the loss, the roadtrip up north is always a tough one and they were hit hard by injury, with Waterhouse again pulling out prior to kick off along with Nathan Smith. Luke Lewis also joins the injury riddled after suffering a leg injury late in the piece.
Parramatta 24 d Manly 20
Few sides that have played so bad have been able to win, the Eels must consider themselves very lucky here. They were horribly flat in this game and an understrength Manly notched up 20 unanswered points early.
Feleti Mateo was rarely involved for the Eels and minor injury to Luke Burt and Eric Grothe saw them busy, but not having their usual impact for the club.
But in what was a mind boggling display of refereeing, the whistle blowers went on a mission and blew Manly out of the game. They heaped penalties on the visiting side and allowed the Eels to get possession and mount a comeback. The Eels going on to score 24 unanswered points themselves, with some of their tries featuring forward passes that went uncalled.
A get out of jail card was used by the Eels and the Manly side will surely be on suicide watch now after botching two big leads.
Roosters 44 d Tigers 32
The revival continues, with Roosters while hiccuping early – rallying in severe heat to turn on a 44 point display at the SFS. Again looking to have a good mix with Pearce and Anasta in the halves and a roaming Todd Carney at the back – they were extremely dangerous from any range.
The Tigers apart from the first quarter, were having an off day. Missing the likes of Payten, Fulton, Gibbs and Ryan – they didn’t have their usual understanding with the footy. Dropped ball and poor passing cost them badly.
The Roosters however are enjoying their rise to the top once more, Brian Smith has found some impressive talent in the forwards with former Storm product Aidan Guerra having a strong match and running off Anasta at every occasion to good effect.
The slimmed down Nate Myles is the everywhere man and for Roosters faithful there is a lot to like about this new side. Their confidence will be extremely good now and they might just be a darkhorse for the Top 8 if this can continue.
NRL Value Bets Round 2
March 18, 2010
With NRL Round 2 approaching, Scrappy Coco runs his eye over the form to see where the value bets are for this weekends Rugby League.
Dragons vs Bulldogs
The Dragons $1.53 host the Bulldogs $2.55 in what should be a juicy matchup. However, after such perfection with possession in Round 1 – it’s hard to go past the Saints. The Bulldogs will no doubt be amped up after losing in Round 1, but speculation that Ben Hannant is homesick and the recent sacking of Lee Tamaari may have some impact on the Belmore boys. St George Illawarra look to be in a good early rhythm and will win here.
Souths vs Gold Coast Titans
The Bunnies at $1.70 are surprisingly favourites here against the Titans at $2.15 – hence, there is good value in backing the Coast. The Titans are quite as rock solid away from home, but after winning ugly in Round 1 – expect even bigger things from them. Souths will improve, but you get the feeling they lack control in the halves to dominate for long periods.
NZ Warriors vs Cronulla Sharks
The Warriors $1.45 are much fancied over the hapless Sharks at $2.65 over the ditch for this game. Simon Mannering returns for the Warriors and his presence will help them no doubt, the free flowing footy the NZ side plays should prove too much for the traveling Sharks. Cronulla were solid last week in their loss to the Storm, but need a tonne of improvement before they’ll win a game. Odds aren’t great on the Warriors, so not too much value for the win. Maybe look at taking the 13+ for $2.70
Knights vs Storm
This will be a real test for the successful Knights $2.25, they jumped the major hurdle in Round 1 and won-through despite intense media scrutiny. A tougher ask against the Storm $1.65 however at $2.25 the Knights are decent value here. They are always strong at home and they should put in a good showing here on the back of confidence from last week. This could be the upset of the Round – the Knights to just pip the stuttering Storm.
North Queensland Cowboys vs Panthers
A real tricky one to pick here. Penrith $2.20 look to have an exciting squad this year – Burns in the halves up against his old side will be great to watch. While he will be heavily involved, his short fuse is a worry here and may cost his side penalties. The Cowboys $1.67 are favourites here, no doubt after getting jumped by the baby Broncos last week – they’ll want to bounce right back. Very hard to tip here, as Penrith can be unpredictable. However, lean towards the Cowboys at home. For those who like better odds and a little risk – consider the Panthers for 13+ as if they do get an early jump, they can turn on the points and it’s paying $5.50
Parramatta Eels vs Manly
The traditional rivals meet at Parramatta to a sold out stadium. The Eels $1.35 didn’t do too much wrong in Round 1, however big expectations will have them ready for this game. Manly $3.05 are in some trouble with injuries and suspension and will find it tough at Parramatta Stadium. It’s a day game, and the Eels tend to prefer the night matches – however, you’d be mad not to look at the home side for 13+ here paying $2.35
Sydney Roosters vs Wests Tigers
The match of the Round looks to be a classic, with the much improved Roosters $2.15 up against the fast finishing Tigers $1.70. When you look at both their first Rounds, the Roosters won well but would have been really revved up for the first round clash against traditional rivals Souths – however repeating it twice is a different story. Everything went the Chooks way in week one and this is probably why the Tigers are classed as favourites. Wests had a tough game in Round 1 but still got out of jail. For value betting, try the Wests Tigers by a 1-12 margin paying $3.10. Yes, the Tigers do score plenty of points – but the defence of the Roosters was commendable in Round 1 and I can’t see this blowing up too much.
Canberra vs Broncos
The Green Machine at home on a Monday Night is always an attractive bet. However, Canberra at $1.65 are a little too short for a value pick. The Broncos are $2.25 and still an unknown in 2010 given their baby faced lineup. While Canberra at home is the safe bet, if you want to throw the dice and go for longer odds – the Broncos by 13+ paying $5.50 is a very attractive bet.
Ricardo: NRL Team of the Week

Leading NRL commentator Ricky Ricardo is back with his team of the week for Round 1. With some assistance from new journo Scrappy Coco, here are the best players from the first weeks Rugby League action:

Fullback – Todd Carney – Playing in his first game bar trials in 18 months, Carney proved to be worth the buy for the Roosters starring in their annihilation of the Bunnies. Involved in almost every play and is already combining well with halves Braith Anasta and Mitchell Pearce. Get your money on him for Dally M.
Winger – Manu Vatuvei: The Beast is back baby!! Manu has struggled over the last few years with some niggling injuries and poor form, but he’s gotten off to a flyer in 2010 scoring two tries in a gusty effort during the Warriors narrow loss to the Titans. Not a bad bet for leading try scorer at this rate.
Centre – Shaun Kenny-Dowall: Moved to the centres by coach Brian Smith to give him some more confidence, he certainly showed it, scoring two tries as well as having improved defence in the Roosters crushing win over the Bunnies. Whether or not he can maintain his defensive efforts remains to be seen though.
Centre – Cooper Vuna: The versatile Knights forward was a lynchpin for the Knights upset win over the Dogs. Despite all of the controversies surrounding the club, Vuna, one of the more experienced bunch, stepped up in light of Gidley’s absence and played out of his skins. He was rewarded with a try for his efforts and will score plenty more.
Winger – Lote Tuqiri: Considering the man played with only one training session under his belt, he did well to play as well as he did. Scored a try in his first game back and looks as fresh as ever. But will he his old legs get the better of him, or is there plenty more juice left in the tank for this warhorse?
Five-Eighth – Benji Marshall: He’s back!! We’ve seen what Benji can do when he is on fire, but can he maintain it? Quite simply, he was man of the match in the Tigers narrow win over the Sea Eagles and he could be a Dally M winner if he continues. Still question marks over his fitness, but he seems to be putting those aside for the time being.
Halfback – Jonathon Thurston: Quite simply, there is no better halfback in the game right now. Almost single-handedly orchestrated a come-from-behind win for the Cowboys in the second half against the Broncos. They fell just short, but Thurston was very close to being MOM in a losing side. Another contender for Dally M.
Prop: Aiden Tolman – This man is the future of the NSW Front Row stocks for many years to come. Still very young, he has shown for the past 2 seasons, just what he is capable of and he showed it again with some strong carries, and a fantastic general awareness of the play for a forward. Could be a bolter this year for SOO.
Hooker: Kevin Kingston: Known in the NRL as ‘The Journeyman’, Kingston seems to have found his feet at his new club Penrith with a strong performance in the Panthers easy win over the Raiders. His speed and creativity out of dummy half added another dimension to their play and will be a nuisance for opposition defences.
Prop – Dan Hunt: Granted a starting berth by coach Wayne Bennett, the Dragons man showed that the selection was warranted with a barnstorming performance against the Eels. His runs were phenomenal and he made solid metres on almost every carry. Very promising future for the prop.
Second Row – Nate Myles: Had without a doubt, his best game in several seasons. He seems lighter and fitter than he has in previous years, yet still plays with the same strength and power as if were the same. Perhaps the highlight of his performance was chasing down Nathan Merritt in perhaps the try-saving tackle of the year even though we’re only in Rd 1. QLD starter guaranteed.
Second Row – Paul Gallen: Yet again showed just how much he means to the Sharks team with a whopping 147 m, 36 tackle effort in a spirited performance from the Sharks in their loss to the Storm. Almost guaranteed a starting spot in the second row for NSW, and should continue his strong numbers in the weeks to come.
Corey Parker: Perhaps one of the most under-rated second rowers in the competition, Parker has been one of the key backstage figures of the Broncos side. With the focus mainly on Lockyer and Hodges, Parker has taken a back-seat from the spotlight, yet still played brilliantly highlighted by his meterage, tackle count and kicking duties. With DJ now overseas, he could be playing SOO for QLD this year.
14. Luke Burt – Perhaps best on ground for the Eels in their narrow loss to the Dragons. Scored a brilliant try down the left hand side, whereby he over-ran the ball, yet still managed to claw the ball in with a one-handed catch before running several metres to score.
15. Mitchell Pearce – Looks like the young halfback is really starting to come of age, even though he has been in the NRL for several years already. Got on the scoresheet and seems to be linking well with prize recruit Todd Carney already. A darkhorse for NSW.
16. Corey Norman – The young Brisbane forward plucked from obscurity played tremendously well for his first game. Showed no signs of pressure or of faltering, and was a key figure in the Broncos narrow win over the Cowboys. Looks to have secured the fullback role with just one performance.
17. Preston Campbell – The little maestro does it again. Despite not being the youngest apple in the tree, Campbell still plays with the same passion and determination that he did 6 years ago and beyond. Great effort.
Player of the Week: Todd Carney.

NRL Power Rankings
March 16, 2010
The Chooks deserve their spot atop the perch at the end of Round 1, it’s literally been a case from the outhouse to the penthouse. Carney performed out of his skin, Nate Myles is reinvented and the key halves in Anasta and Pearce look to be much happier.
Grubbers Comment: Has Nate Myles been to Jenny Craig or was it Tony Fergusons Diet?
2. St George Dragons
Conjured up a 94 percent completion rate, which is unheard of. Probably should have scored more points, but their attack structure was good and their defence was in good knick for early season. Crushed any doubt about their lost stars, Jason Nightingale is more than capable on the flanks and if Hornby has a big year – they have a double threat.
Grubbers Comment: Chances of Dell making a comeback now 450/1
3. Newcastle Knights
Pulled off a huge upset against the fancied Dogs. Not only did they face pressure, but they had Kurt Gidley, Issac De Gois and Ben Rogers all not playing. Given the enthusiasm of Cory Patterson, Steve Simpson and Ben Cross – if they can keep it up, forget the spoon – it could be Top 8.
Grubbers Comment: Amount of medical opinions coach Rick Stone will want on Iassac De Gois before he lets him play? 4-5
4. Penrith Panthers
As expected, the streamlined Panthers were too good for the traveling Raiders. At lot to like about Lachlan Coote and Adrian Purtell. Seem to be a well balanced side this year and if they can plug some holes in their line, could be a Top 8 chance. Only concern for Penny is the players missing out, Sammut and Graham might be on the outter given the form of the starting side and that might create friction down the line.
Grubbers Comment: Reason given for leaving Sammut out of first grade side? 3/1 Poor Haircut 6/1 Poor Tattoo
5. Brisbane Broncos
Stunned everyone. The baby faced assassins made short work of the Titans and even had a touch of flare to boot. Unearthed a possible Karmichael Hunt replacement in Cory Norman and the confidence given from this win is invaluable. Interesting to see how they perform on the road, a great start – but will need to prove consistency with such an inexperienced side currently running around.
Grubbers Comment: Odds Justin Hodges is becoming the most injured player ever? 6/1 (Closing gap quickly on the likes of Ryles, Young and Benji Marshall)
6. Gold Coast Titans
Performed a get-out-of-jail act here, but even though they played poorly – still managed to get a win. When this side begins to gel expect some big wins. A lot to like about their forward pack and talented halves, if both remain consistent then the younger backs will be on autopilot. Will be very hard to beat at Skilled Park this year, expect a big game from Greg Bird next week after the former Origin rep started flat in Round 1.
Grubbers Comment: Estimated cost of Brad Meyers much needed trip to barbers? $350
7. Wests Tigers
Were hyped up prior to this game, but needed to really hit the gas late in the piece to sneak home. At times looked a little disorganised, but their trademark attack on the fringes remains which is a positive sign. Sub forwards Cayless, Moors and Flanagan didn’t add enough impact it seemed. The Tigers will be keen to get Todd Payten back in the frame ASAP and would be happy with Lote settling in quickly.
Grubbers Comment: Amount of TV viewers that understood what Gareth Ellis said when interviewed for Man of the Match? 15-20
8. Melbourne Storm
Were a little flat at Shark Park, but when playing Cronulla most sides struggle to get any cohesion given the negative nature of their game. Did enough to win and this will probably make Bellamy happy given the reshuffle needed to cover for injured Cronk. Having Smith at half took away from his impact around the ruck, however in a good sign it seems Aiden Tolman has lifted to cover for the loss of workhorse Dallas Johnson in defence.
Grubbers Comment: Odds of the Storm missing the Top 8? 1000/1
9. Manly Sea Eagles
The Eagles were flying high for most of their match, but uncharacteristically got violent and started whacking opponents in the head. Forward pack did well considering L’strange, Hall and Cuthbertson all walked away at the end of 2009. Jamie Lyon was extremely impressive in the halves and looks strong enough to play the leading role while Foran can take a back row seat until he develops more. Just couldn’t finish the job. Will find it hard next week with Rose, Kite and Foran all expected to be outed by the judiciary and Brett Stewart out with injury.
Grubbers Comment: Honorable mention to Steve Matai for getting through an entire NRL game without going down injured. No sign of neck, leg or shoulder clutching.
10. Parramatta Eels
Were talked up deluxe prior to kickoff, but were ambushed by the near perfect Saints. The Eels however won’t be too worried just yet, despite having virtually no possession and up against a perfect completion rate by the Dragons – they only lost by 6 and nearly stole it at the death. Will be disappointed in losing Shackleton for the season given the spend on the upcoming backrower – although Tahu slotted back in nicely and Poore didn’t do too much wrong.
Grubbers Comment: Truth in the rumour Shackleton has been offered a gymnastics contract? 12/1
11. NZ Warriors
Luck might have been captaining this side, but they certainly didn’t get much luck in this game. Played so well for the most part, and punched above their weight given the amount of new faces in the side. Always a tough road trip to the Gold Coast, however Ivan Cleary will come away not too down hearted after this game. Hohaia was very good at the back and might keep McKinnon out and the new halfback Brett Seymour was ideal at 7 and kicked to perfection for the most part. Desperate for Steve Price and Simon Mannering to get back on deck.
Grubbers Comment: Estimated number of Round before Ivan Cleary is shown the door? 8-10
12. Canberra Raiders
The Green Machine were never expected to win at Penrith, but they showed some positive signs. Got a little ambushed early, but old faces such as Scott Logan and Alan Tongue were working themselves to a standstill in a good sign for the club. Dugan is a real prospect and if Herbert can have a big year and take pressure off Campese then this side will win most of their home games.
Grubbers Comment: Chances of new assistant coach Any McFadden making the run on side should the team struggle? 40/1
13. North Queensland Cowboys
JT and the boys were expected to whip the kindergarten Broncos but just missed out. Were guilty of going to sleep in patches and possibly took this game too lightly given their heavy favouritism. This side desperately need a positive start to this year for confidence reasons. Will be happy with the role Willie Mason played from the bench, but coach Neil Henry would be a little nervous over the first up loss. Could be a tough year for these boys.
Grubbers Comment: Chances of the JT contract circus ending anytime soon? Slim to none.
14. Cronulla Sharks
More of the same from the Shire boys. Played much like they did in 2009, despite having several new faces in the team. Sure, they were playing the Storm – but they need some belief before they’ll win any games. Forwards were again tradesman like, Gallen hasn’t curbed his temper one little bit and the outside backs look like they would have more chance scoring at a local establishment than on the NRL field. Need something to fall their way.
Grubbers Comment: Odds Ricky Stuart will be on suicide watch by mid-season? 10/1
15. Canterbury Bulldogs
Would have been the biggest talking point of Round 1 had Souths not got smashed by the Chooks. The Doggies were really caught by surprise by Newcastle and the first 20 minutes saw the likes of Hannant, Ennis and Hodgson all being steamrolled. Got some momentum late in this game, but the horse had already bolted. Good to see rookie half Ben Barba getting some game time, as he is the future for this club. Should bounce back hard in Round 2, but will miss Ennis who will be suspended.
Grubbers Comment: Chances of Jamaal Idris linking with Lote Tiquiri to form a Milli Vanilli style duo? 50/1
16. South Sydney Rabbitohs
The only people who would have enjoyed the Bunnies losing apart from Roosters faithful, would be Jason Taylor and George Piggins. Both love seeing Souths struggle given their falling out with club bosses Russell Crowe and co. However, with such a media focus – South Sydney need to really perform or they could have every critic on their backs by Round 3. Worked hard in the engine room, but just dropped too much ball. Admittedly, the Roosters were hot and played extremely well. John Lang isn’t the kind of guy to panic. So it’s not the end of the world just yet.
Grubbers Comment: Chances of Dave Taylor talking to the media again at length this year? Slim to none.
