As a budding rugby league nation, South Africa are always looking for ways to improve their overall development in the sport. In a sign that they are maturing as a rugby league nation, they have announced the introduction of a new team to play in the National Rugby League Championships – the Bethal Broncos.
The new club will be based in Bethal, Mpumalanga and will play in the Mpumalanaga regional competition as well as the National competition.
Their ambitions are set high, with club Chairman Gerry Gendel excited about the formation of the new club and their potential to succeed and achieve.
Gendel knows a lot about the game having played both nationally and internationally for the London Broncos.
Equally excited about the new venture and club is Kobus Botha, South African Rugby League President.
“The registration of new clubs is important to the growth of rugby league in South Africa and the new National Club Championship is designed to promote, cultivate and entrench new clubs in the national set up,” said Botha.
“This forms part of SARL’s strategy for expansion into undeveloped territories and I for one am very happy with the excellent work being done by so many unsung heroes to promote the sport.â€
