Eels demolish a poor Sharks side

It was a much  needed win for the Parramatta Eels as they went into cruise control, winning 40-6 on the back of some great work from their new halves combination, Casey McGuire and Jeff Robson.

The two combined to set-up four tries between them, as the Eels proved far too clinical, with solid support from fullback Jarryd Hayne, and second rowers Taniela Lasalo and Justin Horo.

Luke Burt finished with a personal tally of 20 points, courtesy of 2 tries and 6 goals, whereas for Jordan Atkins, he also got on the scoresheet twice, as he performed solidly on the wing last night.

After not making the Origin side, Jarryd Hayne showed just what he is capable of, laying on two try assists in the game – one a beautiful cut-out pass for Atkins to score, and the second a pin-point bomb for Justin Horo.

One sour note in the win was a potentially serious injury to Shane Shackleton, but after careful observation from the physio and medical staff, and, after a trip to hospital, he was cleared of any serious injury.

Whilst one of the stars of the game in Robson wishes to remain with the club in the future, Kearney said that in 2012, there may not be a spot for him.

“We’ve had an offer out for Jeff for the last eight weeks, we needed to make things concrete for where we’re headed next year,” Kearney said.

“Where that leaves Jeff I’m not 100 per cent sure at this stage.

“We made it pretty clear that once we’d made the decisions (on Sandow and Roberts) that we wouldn’t be able to fit everyone in.”

On the matter, Robson said:

“I’d love to stay at the club, but they’ve signed another couple of halves and I just have to look at what’s best for me.”

Pleased with his performance in the win, Hayne revealed why he was sporting a new look as he ran out onto the field for the game last night.

“We’ve got this thing called ‘spin the wheel’ and it was Hindy’s choice and I had to dye my hair,” said Hayne, who revealed he was all set to bleach his locks.

“The coach came in and said ‘no’, I’ll look like an idiot.

“So Hindy said ‘shave it’ … the boys think it’s pretty funny.”

He did point out that his side was missing some senior players, but he refused to use that as an excuse for their poor showing, and Sharks coach Shane Flanagan is sure to make his players work hard during the week.

“They were on tonight and we were off … to come up with that tonight, it’s not acceptable,” he said.
