It would have been the last thing that the Roosters or their fans would have wanted to hear, as they prepare for their clash with the Bulldogs later tonight – but their representative centre in Joseph ‘BJ’ Leilua, was arrested early on Saturday morning.
Leilua was arrested at St George Hotel, with St George Police Crime Manager Gary Ballard, saying that the centre has been charged with three offences: assault, breaching an AVO and a telecommunications offence.
It is alleged by police that Leilua spat on a former girlfriend of his, following an argument outside the Allawah Hotel in the early hours of Saturday morning.
‘‘He was then taken out of the hotel by security and a number of text messages received after the fight,’’ Detective Inspector Ballard said.
‘‘It will also be alleged that the man sent personal photos of the woman via his mobile phone to other people,’’ a police media spokesman said.
With the woman involved immediately reporting the matter to St George Police, Leilua turned himself in, resulting in his subsequent arrest.
Leilua was granted bail, and will appear in Kogarah Local Court in June.
The centre will not play for the Roosters tonight – with the arrest a fall from grace for Leilua, who only last Wednesday, was 18th man for the NSW side.
