It is the sort of news that no team wants to hear in the lead-up to their clash on the weekend, but talented Brisbane Broncos youngster Matt Berwick is currently in a coma, following a car crash on Thursday night.
Berwick, who is a centre at the club, and has represented the Queensland Schoolboys side, was involved in accident regarded as serious.
“Our under-20s player Matt Berwick was involved in car accident last night,” Broncos CEO Paul White said.
“Matthew is in a serious but stable condition. The Broncos have staff with the family (and) are giving them and Matt their full support.
“The club and Matt’s family understand and appreciates both the concern and the support being offered at this time. We ask that the family is now given the appropriate space and privacy to allow Matt to begin his recovery.”
Berwick, who is only 19, is currently studying a degree in Exercise and Movement Science.
