Troublesome Kelly joins Titans training squad

Albert Kelly

Everyone knows that he does not have the best record in the NRL, having been sacked by the Eels, the Knights and the Sharks – but talented NRL player Albert Kelly will receive one final chance in RL, signing a part-time trial-based deal with the Gold Coast Titans in their training squad.

Along with the signing of Kelly to the training squad, the Titans have also confirmed the signing of Wigan fullback Matt Russell for 2 years, and Raiders prop Mark Ioane for 1 year.

Kelly, who is the cousin of Souths star fullback Greg Inglis has had his fair share of indiscretions, having not played in the NRL since 2011.

Scott Clark, the Titans General Manager of Football, said that the club was willing and keen to provide Kelly with another opportunity to play.

“Albert has an opportunity to train with the full-time squad over the off-season and to play some trial matches during the pre-season,” said Clark.

“If he is able to tick all of the boxes both on and off the field, then it could lead to something more permanent with the club.

“We have been able to provide a positive environment for other players who have had off-field issues in the past, so hopefully Albert can make the most of his opportunity here with the Titans.”

Clark also said that with the additions of Russell and Ioane will further strengthen the depth of the club.

“We are happy with the roster we’ve been able to assemble for next season,” said Clark.

“Mark is a former Junior Kiwi who has played some good football for the Raiders’ feeder team ,and will add to our depth in the front row.

“Matt Russell is a young talent who is still eligible to play in the NYC (National Youth Competition) next season and is moving to Australia in search of an opportunity in the NRL.”
