Young Broncos forward heads South to the Hunter

For some young players who are unable to crack first-grade for their current side, a seachange is needed – and for young Brisbane forward Mitchell Frei, he made a decision to progress in his career, by signing for the 2013 season with the Newcastle Knights.

Frei, who also has an option to extend his stay for 2014, is a QLD U20's representative, and is excited at the prospect of joining the Knights.

“I am looking forward to more opportunities at the Knights and I can’t wait to work under Wayne Bennett,” Frei said.

“I had a little bit to do with Wayne during my junior years at the Broncos and I am really looking forward to being coached by him full-time.”

Knights coach Wayne Bennett is also pleased with the recruitment of Frei, citing the club's intention to have a good young core of props coming through the club's ranks, with Frei now a part of that core.

“Mitchell adds depth to the young front rowers we are assembling at the Knights, which we identified as an area we needed to strengthen going forward,” Bennett said.

“We hope this young group, including Mitchell, grow and develop into long term players at the Knights.”
