David Furner

They were on the lookout for an assistant coach to serve under new head coach Paul Green and the North Queensland Cowboys have found one, with former Raiders Canberra coach David Furner agreeing to a 2-year deal.

In a new chapter for Furner after his sacking from the Raiders earlier this year, what the former Raiders coach is really looking forward to is the chance to work alongside the likes of Johnathan Thurston, Matt Scott, James Tamou & others.

“They really are quality people and everyone I’ve had dealings with at the Cowboys has been the same,” said Furner.

“The Cowboys have always struck me as being a really family-type club and that’s the type of environment I want to be part of.

“It’s going to be a new chapter in my life and it’s going to be a very exciting one.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Paul Green and the tremendous roster the Cowboys have assembled.”

Furner, who enjoyed a successful playing career with the Canberra Raiders and the Wigan Warriors, has since moved up the ranks in the coaching world, having started as an assistant back in 2006 with the Raiders.

With a new challenge ahead of him, Furner is looking forward to what lies ahead.

“I love the game and I love coaching,” Furner said.

“To get an opportunity to come to North Queensland is exciting for both my family and myself.

“Greeny and I will continue to have some talks and he’ll let me know what areas he wants me to focus on.

“We’ve got that working relationship going straight away even though I’m over here in England.

“We’ll be putting our plans together before I head back to Australia.”

Peter Parr, the Cowboys General Manager of Football, said that the club is excited to have someone like Furner in their ranks and they look forward to what he can do working under Paul Green.

“David brings a strong skill set to the job, including a great work ethic and knowledge of the game, and will be ready to make a difference with the Cowboys,” Parr said.

“We’re very happy to have him on board with Paul Green and look forward to getting him here to contribute to our pre-season build-up when his commitments with the Kangaroos are over, hopefully as a World Cup winner.”
