Michael Maguire

Speculation linked him with a move away from the South Sydney Rabbitohs but the Redfern based club have retained their main man, with Michael Maguire re-signing until the end of the 2017 season.

Maguire, who has burst onto the scene as one of the NRL’s elite upcoming coaches, boasts an impressive 68% win record so far in the NRL and he is excited with the opportunity to continue at Souths.

“Pleased to say that I’ve extended my contract until 2017 and really looking forward to the years’ ahead,” said Maguire.

After successful stints in England with the Wigan Warriors and with the Melbourne Storm as an assistant – collecting numerous titles in the process – the work that Maguire has done with the club has helped Souths become an elite NRL side again.

With the club seeking to chase a premiership, club Chairman Nick Pappas sees the news as crucial for the club moving forward.

“This is a great day for our Club,” Mr Pappas said.

“Michael’s commitment for the next four years should inspire all of our Members and supporters that a great era for our Club beckons.”

With trial games and the season just around the corner, Maguire is keen to get stuck in with the players, knuckle down and do what is required to win.

“We’re really looking forward to games and the boys have put in really well over the pre-season,” said Maguire.

“We’re at the stage now where we’re ready for games.”

For Maguire, he is also keen to continue the solid work and development with the current playing group and with the juniors coming through the ranks.

“I’m really pleased to have re-signed here, at such a great Club, and to have the opportunity to continue to work on everything we’ve been doing for an extended period,” Coach Maguire said.

“My staff and I are very dedicated to making sure we get the best performances out of the team every week, and the boys have shown that same dedication and commitment so far throughout the pre-season.

“I also see Souths Juniors as a major part of our organisation moving forward and the implementation of the various programs to help develop our juniors into the next generation of Rabbitohs.

“To our Members, I really appreciate everything that they’re doing for us as a Club. We want to keep enjoying the ride alongside our Members and keep working hard to achieve the goals we’ve set ourselves as a group.

“We’ve got a way to go to get to where we want to be and we’re working extremely hard to reach those goals.

“It’s great to be a part of the Rabbitohs family.”

Equally excited to have retained Maguire at Souths is the CEO, Shane Richardson, who sees Maguire as one of the best young coaches in the NRL.

“Michael is one of the best young coaches in the NRL and we couldn’t be happier that he has committed to the Club for the next four seasons,” Mr Richardson said.

“The changes Michael has implemented here in his first two years as Head Coach have done wonders for our football programs, and we are looking forward to working with him on the continuing improvements we are looking to make, both on and off the field.

“He has the respect of our players, staff, board of directors, corporate partners and Members and we’re pleased that he will be part of the Rabbitohs family for at least the next four years.”
