The game probably had the most field goals anyone has seen in a rugby league game for some time but it was enough to get the Storm a victory, as the milestone game for both Billy Slater and Cam Smith saw the Storm win 18-17 in a tense affair with the Penrith Panthers.
Drop goals seem to the normal way to win for the Storm this year, following Cam Smith’s golden-point winning field goal against Manly last week.
This week, in what was a close-run affair against a dogged and determined Panthers side, it was Cooper Cronk who kicked the winning field goal – he ended up with 2 for the game.
As for the two milestones, Billy Slater was playing in his 250th career NRL game and Cameron Smith broke the club record for most games played, passing Matt Geyer.
With build-up galore before the game, Slater was just pleased that he got through it all.
“I’m glad the game’s over to be honest but It’s been a really good week,” said the star fullback.
“To have your 250th to coincide with Cam breaking the games record I was obviously happy to share the moment with Smithy.
“We shared a lot in our career and for it to fall on the same day for us was probably fitting.”
There was a moment where it could have gone South after Billy Slater was sin-binned but they held their own, a trait that pleased coach Craig Bellamy.
“It’s been a really big night for the club and I am just proud the guys did find a way,” said Craig Bellamy.
“When Billy was in the bin we were down to 12 men and I though there could have been a little bit of panic set in but I didn’t think there was, I thought we did a really good job there.
“We will have a look at what we need to improve on in the next couple of days but tonight is a night of celebration for the club.”
