Dane Nielsen

Another story the NRL did not need, with the St George Illawarra Dragons terminating the contract of centre Dane Nielsen effective immediately.

The decision to terminate Nielsen’s contract comes after an incident in Cronulla on March 22 in which the centre was stood down from all club activities.

The club statement released is as follows:

The St George Illawarra Dragons have terminated the contract of Dane Nielsen effective immediately for breaches of his obligations under his NRL Contract.

Nielsen was involved in an incident in a public premise at Cronulla on Sunday, March 22 and had been stood down from all Club activities since this time, while receiving counselling support from the Club.

“This is an unfortunate circumstance for both Dane and the Club and the decision has followed a thorough investigation undertaken by the Club and the NRL Integrity Unit as well as a Hearing before the Board of the St George Illawarra Dragons,” said Dragons CEO Peter Doust.

“Unfortunately Dane’s particular actions were in breach of his obligations and upon review of all information by the Board of the Dragons, the decision was made that termination of his contract was the appropriate outcome.

“Whilst Dane will no longer officially be a part of the Dragons, the Club has offered to assist him with any necessary support from an education and welfare perspective”.

The Dragons will make no further comment on this matter.
