Joey Leilua

Halfway through this past season, it was clear that Joey Leilua was after a move to reinvigorate his career and he got it. He performed decently and that form was enough for the Canberra Raiders to offer him a new deal until the end of 2018.

The former Newcastle Knights centre played six matches for the Raiders in 2015 and will be looking to add to that total and make the most of the opportunities.

Leilua wants to get himself fitter, work hard and cement a spot in the Raiders line-up for 2016.

“It’s good to be here for another three years in Canberra as it’s a good squad and I can’t wait for it,” said Leilua.

“Ricky’s given me an opportunity to come to the club and get my career going in the right direction, so I need to work hard and earn my place.”

“It’s going to be a hard pre-season, but I know if I put the effort in I’ll be able to start the season well.”

It seems like Leilua has been involved with the game for some time but still only 23, he wants to achieve the goals he has set for himself.

“I’ve got my goals of what I want to achieve but I like to keep them personal,” he said.

“I know if I train hard and prepare well for the season I’ll be able to make an impact for the Raiders which is what I need to do.”

The club know how crucial Leilua is for their side and are pleased to have re-signed him.

“Joey’s a very talented player who we know will continue to develop with us if he keeps up a strong work ethic,” Raiders CEO Don Furner said.

“We see him as a part of our plans over the next three seasons and if he reaches his full potential he could become one of our most dangerous attacking players.”
