He left the club to seek greener pastures and enjoyed some success away from the Newcastle Knights but Peter Mata’utia rejoins the club, and will once again play alongside his brothers.
Peter, the eldest of the Mata’utia brothers, recently played for the St George Illawarra Dragons.
He requested to leave the Dragons and sought an early release, one that was granted by the club. The Knights acted and the rest was history.
The utility back made a total of 25 first-grade appearances for the Dragons and the club wish him well as he returns home.
“Peter has requested an early release from his present contract which has been granted to take up another opportunity,†said Director of Rugby League Pathways Ian Millward.
“We wish him the very best for his future and thank him for his contributions to our Club.â€
With the Knights crying out for more genuine back-line depth, re-signing Mata’utia is a good fit for them and has coach Nathan Brown pleased.
“Peter is a local junior who we are bringing home, and that is important,†coach Nathan Brown said on Wednesday afternoon.
“More importantly he is a left centre, which is something we have been looking for.
“Peter is a good, consistent first grade player and he will help enhance our young developing players.â€
