Newcastle Knights back-rower Mitch Barnett

An unheralded player in the Newcastle Knights side, Mitch Barnett has signed a new three year deal with the club.

Already contracted for 2020, Barnett’s deal runs until the 2023 season.

New Knights coach Adam O’Brien says Barnett is exactly the sort of player the club needs in their ranks.

“Mitch represents the Club in every aspect of the way we want to play. He’s tough, reliable and represents the region with pride,” O’Brien said.

“He’s a good example to our younger players for how to live like a Knight. He trains the way he plays.

“He adds aggression to our middle but is exceptional in his role on an edge as well.”

2019 was a breakout year for Barnett, who established himself as an edge threat for the Knights.

With 77 NRL games to his name so far, Barnett did not hide his passion for the Knights.

“It’s no secret that I’m passionate about this Club,” Barnett said.

“I love the town, my teammates and the passionate supporters.

“To have my future sorted for at least another three years is something I’m proud of.

“I have plenty of things I want to achieve in the game and I believe that with hard work, I’ll get to where I want to be and where the Club deserves to be.”
