At just 19 years of age, he has the world at his feet, and is a tremendously talented player – there is only one problem. At ESL side, the Wigan Warriors, he cannot get game time, given that equally electrifying talent Sam Tomkins, is in front of him.
As a result of that, Wigan Warriors back-up fullback Matthew Russell has signed a 2-year deal with the Gold Coast Titans, starting in 2013.
Russell being 19, is still eligible to play in the Toyota Cup for the Gold Coast, and whilst Titans Football Manager Scott Clark confirmed the signing of Russell, the club is unsure as to what level they will play him at.
“He’s a young talent from England who’s looking for an opportunity over here in Australia,” he said.
“He’s still under-20s age (next year), but we’re not sure if he’ll play in the NYC, Queensland Cup or push for a first grade spot.
“He’s a young, talented kid looking for an opportunity and we can provide that for him.
“He’s got Tomkins in front of him at Wigan and knows he’s not going to get much of an opportunity there.
“With English blokes coming over here and proving themselves, he wants to be part of that.”
