As childhood friends growing up, the decision to continue playing alongside each other and remaining at the Brisbane Broncos would have been easy and that is exactly what Matt Gillett and Jack Reed have done.
The duo have signed new long-term deals at the club, Gillett until 2016 and Reed until 2017 – both young players with representative experience.
With the Broncos continued focus about player retention, maintaining a good, young core and promoting their younger players, coach Anthony Griffin said that the club was excited to retain the duo.
“These players have shown great talent and application to their football as evidenced by their promotion to representative honours so early in their career,†said Griffin.
“Jack played Test footy after his first year in the NRL and Matt has gone on from being NRL Rookie of the Year to playing State of Origin for Queensland.
“Both guys are important players for the Broncos’ future and we are pleased they have decided to sign long-term contracts.â€
It was at the Bribie Island Warrigals where the two played and grew up and with just 4 weeks between them in age, Gillett is pleased that both he and Reed have agreed to extend their stays at the same time.
“I am very happy to have settled my future with the Broncos and can now concentrate on the 2013 NRL season,†said Gillett.
“Jack and I have been playing footy together a long while so it is nice to be able to settle our futures at the same time.â€
Also pleased to not only re-sign with the Broncos but to continue playing alongside good friend Matt Gillett, is Jack Reed himself.
“It is great to be able to have such a long agreement with the Broncos sorted out, and to know that Matt and I are going to be on the same team for a long time to come yet,” said Reed.
