Whether you like it or not, it does decide a winner, with golden point required to break the deadlock between the Melbourne Storm and a spirited Gold Coast Titans side, who were on the end of a loss that ends their season, after a Cooper Cronk field goal.

With the field goal the difference in the Storm’s 23-22 win, it was another decision late in the second half that had Titans coach John Cartwright fuming, one that he believes effectively ended their season.

In what looked like a try when Aidan Sezer pounced on a ball in the in-goal, the video referees ruled that Titans forward Ben Ridge had knocked it forward, leaving Cartwright rather irate.

“It cost us our season,” Cartwright said.

“How he came up with the decision I really don’t know.

“The refs on the field were shocked, the whole crowd was shocked.

“Our season was on the line, it’s heart-breaking, I’ve never felt like this, ever.”

For the conspiracy theorists and based on what Titans co-captain Greg Bird was told by some Storm players, they said that Ben Ridge had not touched the ball in the lead-up to that try.

“There must have been a secret camera angle that I didn’t see standing out on the field,” Bird said.

“I don’t know how they came up with it.”

Despite the loss, it was a stellar way for the Titans to end the season as they gave the competition heavyweights a run for their money and finally saw the best of Dave Taylor, who put on a barnstorming display.

Whilst he was pleased with his side’s improvement after last week’s loss, Storm coach Craig Bellamy knows that there is still more work to be done heading into the finals.

“It was a strange old game, there were some good parts and not so good parts so hopefully we can put it all together next week,” Bellamy said.

“We got a tough work-out there so hopefully it’s good for us coming into the next part of the season.

The only sour note for the Storm was a sternum injury for veteran half Brett Finch who will undergo scans, with the timely return of Gareth Widdop for QLD Cup feeder side Easts Tigers a boost for the finals.
