Watching and nurturing a player coming through the ranks is a great feeling for any club and knowing that both the player and the club want to continue the partnership is what fans want to see, as Hull KR announce that young gun Liam Salter has re-signed until the end of 2017.
Already contracted until the end of next season, the club acted swiftly to secure the services of the 20-year old and for Salter, he is excited to be continuing his career at a club he loves.
The club approached me with regards to extending my deal and I had no hesitation in signing it,†he said.
“I’ve grown up supporting the club and to have the opportunity to play here is a real honour for me.
“To be honest, contracts are not something I worry about too much. All I concentrate on is playing well and continuing to improve and I think the rest then takes care of itself. I’m probably a bit further on than where I thought I’d be in terms of my development and have played a lot more games this year than I expected to.
“I think I had a steady season and went okay but obviously there are areas of my game that I need to work on. Now that my long-term future is sorted, I’ll keep working hard and hopefully continue my improvement as a player.â€
With the club believing that Salter made solid progress in 2013, coach Craig Sandercock is expecting even more improvement out of Salter in the coming years.
“Liam has come a long way this year,†he said.
“He’s someone who we probably didn’t think would play every week. We knew that he was a good, solid player and that we might get 10 games out of him. But he really exceeded all expectations this year and if he has a big pre-season and works on the areas we’ve identified for him to improve upon then we’re really confident that Liam will be a great player for this club for many years to come.
“His first challenge is to put on some weight as he’s still young and is coming up against some big blokes. The second challenge is to train hard and make sure that he continues to show the good form he produced for us in 2013.
I’m confident that Liam will do that as his attitude is outstanding. I’ve coached many young kids during my time and his attitude is as good as any that I’ve come across previously.â€
