Opportunity in the NRL can be hard to come by and for Michael Oldfield, a winger from the Sydney Roosters, a chance to play in France for the Catalan Dragons was one that he could not pass up, signing with the Perpignan-based club for 2 years.
Oldfield, who is still only 23, has played 24 games in the NRL and made his debut for the Manly Sea Eagles in 2010.
“The signing of Michael is a great news for the club,” said Catalan Dragons head coach, Laurent Frayssinous.
“He is a young and fast player and his pace will be a great value in our backline next season. We lacked pace in the past seasons and the addition of this player will allow us to fill this gap.
A versatile utility back, Oldfield can also play fullback and centre and after talks with the Roosters and Oldfield’s agent, a decision was made to release the player early and sign a deal with Catalans.
“We found an agreement with the Sydney Roosters and his agent to release Michael from the final year of his contract and allow him to join the Catalans Dragons,” said Catalans CEO Christophe Jouffret.
After the signings of Jeff Lima and Ben Pomeroy, we were looking for a fast winger and we are delighted to welcome Michael in Perpignan.â€
