With an eagerness to expand the game of rugby league in Malta and an ambition to have the chance to play in the 2017 Rugby League World Cup, Maltese rugby league has received a significant boost, with the nation awarded RLEF Affiliate Membership.

After applying in early November, their request has since been approved, with the approval making Malta the smallest RLEF affiliate.

Someone who has seen this all the way through is Anthony Micallef, the National Development Manager of the MRL and the Maltese national coach, who says that the memberships is a testament to rugby league in the nation and is a result of their continued hard work and development.

“The MRL’s application is a credit to the players, administrators, followers and corporate partners behind the Malta Rugby League,” said Micallef.

“Our organisation isn’t simply made up of players who go out on a Saturday and Sunday to play the game they love, but a lot more than that and we have players across the leagues of Malta, Australia, the UK, the USA and others to name but a few”

“I would also like to single out David Axisa who heads up our Maltese Heritage Rugby League administration in Australia for working tirelessly in putting together the application”

With the RLEF approving it all, Danny Kazandjian, the RLEF General Manager, said it was deserved for Malta to take the next step and that they should be commended for the work and effort they have put in.

“The Malta Rugby League put forward an exemplary portfolio and are to be congratulated on the professionalism and thoroughness of the application,” said Kazandjian.
