There were some fears at some point that he may never play the game again after suffering a tough neck injury but Kyle Turner fought his way back and has been re-signed by the South Sydney Rabbitohs for a further two years.
Turner, still only 23, has played in a total of 30 NRL games to date, and that could have been more had it not been for a neck injury sustained in the 2015 Indigenous All-Stars game.
As a result, he required disc-replacement surgery but he always maintained hope of a return and many knew how talented he was, so they were also in his corner during recovery.
The club praised Turner’s commitment and effort to get himself right for a return and coach Michael Maguire was especially pleased with his resiliency.
“Kyle has been an inspiration to not only his team mates and the staff here at the Rabbitohs, but to the Members and the community as well,†Coach Maguire said.
“You saw that by the response he received when he ran back on the field for the first time after his injury. The standing ovation he received shows how much he means to our Members and supporters.
“He has worked so hard to get his body right after sustaining that neck injury, and he has been rewarded by fighting his way back into our first grade side at the end of the season.
“His work ethic is second-to-none, he is humble and grateful for the opportunities he has earned at our Club, and I’m really looking forward to continuing to work with him and our other young squad members into the future.â€
The man himself loves the club and is relishing the chances he is getting in the first team set-up.
“I can’t tell you how happy I am to be here until at least the end of 2017, and I’m looking forward to getting as much out of pre-season training as I can leading into the new season,†Turner said.
“Everyone was so supportive of me as I worked through my neck injury and I want to repay everyone that has shown me that support.
“I love this Club, I love what it stands for, I love playing with these guys, and the Members of our Club are the best in the competition.
“I’m really happy to have this extension sorted and I can’t wait to get back out on the training field, and then to run out in front of our Members again in the new-year.â€
