A clinical defensive effort in the second half has gifted the Brisbane Broncos their second win of the season, a hard-fought 25-10 win over the New Zealand Warriors at Suncorp Stadium.

Whilst their attack was fluid, it was their defence throughout the match that was the talking point. In 10 straight games, they have kept their opposition below 20 points, a new club record.

Boosted by the surprise returns of Jordan Kahu and Jack Reed pre-game, the Broncos were in control for much of the game.

Led by five-eighth Anthony Milford, he produced a stellar performance, capping off the win with a field goal to put the icing on the cake.

It was the left side attack through Jack Reed and Corey Oates that did all the damage, with the duo both getting on the scoresheet.

Oates continued his good form on the wing and was set to cement that spot but he left the field due to a shoulder injury late in the second half.

And there were further injuries, as Blake Ayshford suffered a concussion and Manu Vatuvei suffered potential rib cartilage damage.

The first half was close and tense and the Warriors showed some fight and ticker, particularly when recruit and Kiwi hooker Issac Luke burrowed his way over from dummy half.

But despite going in at 12-10 at the break, the Warriors could not capitalise on field position and could not penetrate the Broncos sturdy defence.

The Warriors had their chances to apply continued pressure on the Broncos but let them off the hook a few times in their own in-goal.

“I thought we missed a couple of opportunities in the first half,” said Warriors coach, Andrew McFadden.

“We got the ball in-goal a couple of times and they passed in the in-goal and got out. Credit to them to get behind the footy but I thought there were a couple of guys that missed their assignment there that could have made a difference.”
