Not too many gave the Sydney Roosters a chance at winning last night but the final score-line was higher than many thought, as the Roosters were humbled 40-0.

Usually, Johnathan Thurston is the star of the show but it was fullback Lachlan Coote who stepped it up last night, with a stellar performance.

The North Queensland Cowboys burst out of the blocks with two tries in the first eight minutes, both of which were set by Coote.

The next little period became somewhat of a stalemate as the Roosters defence dug deep, before a late first-half try to Coote gave the Cowboys an 18-0 lead.

The second half was where the Cowboys asserted their dominance as bench forward Scott Bolton led the way with another tremendous display.

His tenacity, power and hard-running off the bench, had the Roosters on the ropes repeatedly before he eventually scored a try of his own.

And the Roosters misery was further compounded by a torn pectoral muscle to Dale Copley and a broken leg for Ian Henderson.

With the Roosters young halves duo still learning and forming a partnership, they received support from captain Jake Friend.

“We’ve got ‘Joey’ (Andrew Johns) and ‘Pearcey’ (Mitchell Pearce) helping where he can. They’re young and as a team we need to help them as much as we can and we just have to get our last plays on and we’ve got to get that little bit extra on the sets and the fifth plays,” Friend said.

“They’re doing all the right things at training and we just have to produce that in games. All the tools are there; we’ve done everything but as a collective group we’ve got to get it on.”

After a loss in Rd 2, Cowboys coach Paul Green was pleased with the way his side responded.

“It was good to see that the boys responded [to last week’s loss] the way they did,” Green said.

“It was pleasing to see that [relentlessness], and it’s where we need to get back to. I thought that’s how we finished last year, but we just need to be consistent with the little tough areas of the game and we probably lacked that. It’s good to see we had it tonight.”
