Jack Buchanan

They say the grass is always greener on the other side and that can be said for opportunity for rugby league players, with Jack Buchanan taking up a deal on the other side of the world with the Widnes Vikings.

Buchanan, who was given his first major opportunity by the Tigers, will join the SL outfit on an 18-month deal.

Although it was a tough decision for the forward, he had to do what was right for his career.

“This was a very tough decision to leave the club that has given me the opportunity to make my dreams,” said Buchanan.

“But I feel that for my career at this stage, that it is the right decision.”

Buchanan was grateful to the club for the opportunities provided to him and thanked the Tigers fans for their support.

“I’ve really enjoyed my four years with Wests Tigers and I want to thank the Club for giving me the opportunity to play first grade,” Buchanan said.

“To have played alongside some of the great players in this team has been unreal.

“I’ve made life-long friends at the Club and that is something that I’m really grateful for.

“I’d really like to thank the Wests Tigers Members and fans who have stuck with the team through the tough times and I’ll definitely be cheering on the boys from over in England.”

The efforts of Buchanan were praised by Tigers coach Jason Taylor.

“On behalf of the Club, I would like to wish Jack well in the next chapter of his career at Widnes,” Taylor said. “Jack has been a valuable member of the squad over the past few seasons at Wests Tigers.

“The opportunity to play first grade with Widnes on a regular basis is a great opportunity for Jack and I wish him all the best with his career in Super League,” he said.

As for Widnes themselves, coach Denis Betts was pleased to sign Buchanan.

“Jack is a young big front rower with a great engine,” Betts said.

“He has significant NRL experience and is ready to make his mark, looking to establish himself as a starting front rower and wants to do that here at Widnes.

“Again this is a big statement from us as a club. Jack is an enthusiastic player that wants to come here and progress his career making himself into a better player.

“He is a great signing for us.”
