Newcastle Knights utility Sione Mata’utia

In a boost for the side moving forward, the Newcastle Knights have re-signed Sione Mata’utia.

Mata’utia, adept at both centre and back-row, will stay with the Knights until the end of 2021.

Still only 22 years old, Mata’utia has established himself as a key player for the Knights.

With his future sorted, the Knights can now get back to watching him play and performing each week.

“As a Club, we’re thrilled Sione has committed his future to the Knights,” General Manager Football, Darren Mooney said.

“What’s also pleasing is the fact Sione never wanted to leave.

He’s a talented footballer and we believe his best is still to come.”

Mata’utia’s versatility has both worked in his favour and against him.

A move to the back-row last season and early this season was plagued by numerous concussions.

This prompted a move back to the centres that has seen Mata’utia perform well.

“He started his career on the wing, moved into the backrow and now finds himself in the centres, such is his adaptability,” Mooney continued.

“What the future holds, we don’t know but Sione has the character and commitment to tackle whatever challenge is thrown his way.

For Mata’utia, the club are like his family and so the decision was an easy one.

“I’m really excited and also very proud to re-sign with the Club,” Mata’utia said.

“The Knights are much more than a team, they are my family.

“It was an easy decision to stay.”

With the club potentially building towards something good, Mata’utia is excited to be a part of that.

“Everyone can see we are building something very special in Newcastle and I can’t wait for the Club to continue to grow,” Mata’utia continued.

I’m glad I get to keep riding the wave.”
