New Zealand Warriors recruit Wayde Egan

A surprise release by the Penrith Panthers will see hooker Wayde Egan cross the Tasman and sign with the New Zealand Warriors.

Progressing through the club’s pathways, Egan had some success but with no guarantee of regular game-time, the Panthers allowed him to pursue this opportunity.

His deal with the Warriors will be for the next three seasons and with 29 NRL games to his name, he has many more to add to his tally.

“Wayde and his management this week approached Panthers to request an immediate release from the remainder of his contract,” Panthers General Manager of Rugby League Matt Cameron said.

“As a club we would have liked Wayde to see out his contract, however, we also understand the opportunity presented by the Warriors was a difficult one for Wayde to turn down at this point in his career.

“Wayde’s request for a release has been granted out of respect to him and we wish him the best of luck moving forward.”

With his release, the Warriors are pleased to have signed him to add to their hooker stocks.

“We’re delighted to agree terms with Wayde for three years,” said Warriors General Manager Brian Smith.

“He’s a high-quality hooker who had an outstanding NYC career and has really impressed since coming into first grade.”

The club welcomes him and know how crucial his signing could be for them.

“We welcome him and look forward to his contribution to our club in 2020 and beyond,” Smith continued.

“His enthusiasm and skills at dummy half have attracted the attention of our recruitment and coaching staff and we know he’ll make a significant impact with us.”
