Wests Tigers veteran Chris Lawrence

Loyal, revered and determined. Chris Lawrence’s name deserves to be etched in Wests Tigers folklore.

The veteran Tigers forward started as a 17-year old and has now made the call to retire at the end of the season.

At present, he is one of only three players to play 250 games for the club and is the leading try-scorer.

The local junior is still the youngest player in club history to make their debut, aged just 17 years and 283 days.

He made an impression then and never looked back.

It was never the easiest of roads for Lawrence in his career.

A devastating hip injury that made him question whether he would play again and a horrific facial injury that did the same.

Despite the two setbacks, Lawrence persevered, dug deep and came out stronger as a player and a person.

The centre turned back-rower forged on, continuing to lead, score tries and provide advice for the younger generation.

Lawrence will go down as one of the club’s best ever and coach Michael Maguire praised the veteran.

“There’s a lot that I admire about Chris, from his toughness to his character on and off the field,” Maguire said.

“In doing so, Chris has set the standard for what local juniors of Wests Tigers should aspire to be.

“To have played the entirety of his 15-year career with Wests Tigers, Chris has shown tremendous determination and drive in all that he does.

“I am sure the future generations of this great club will always look up to that.”

The decision to retire is never an easy one for a player but Lawrence felt that it was the right move for him.

“It’s a decision I came to this year with an open mind about what I’m going to do,” said Lawrence.

“I think the time is right, both mentally and physically.

“I pride myself always day in and day out putting everything on the line in training, preparation and having that drive to do whatever it takes in the game.

“I just don’t think if I went another year, that would be there and any little self doubt is a sign to me that it’s time to give it away.”
