Newly appointed North Queensland Cowboys assistant coach Dean Young

Todd Payten will be the head coach of the North Queensland Cowboys and alongside him will be assistant Dean Young.

Young, who has most recently been filling in as interim coach of the St George Illawarra Dragons, has signed on as an assistant for three years.

The former premiership-winning player retired in 2012 and immediately transitioned into coaching.

He coached the Illawarra Steelers SG Ball side and then the Dragons 2014 NYC side.

It was not long when he was promoted to assistant coach at the Dragons in 2015, a position he held for six seasons.

In addition to club roles, Young has also been an assistant for both Tonga and the Indigenous All-Stars.

“Along with our incoming Head Coach Todd Payten, Dean’s appointment gives the club a fresh start and some clean air,” Cowboys Director of Football Peter Parr said.

“Dean had a long and successful career as a player.

“He won a premiership and played both Origin and International football.”

The Cowboys are confident he can work well with Payten to achieve better things in 2021.

“In our discussions with him, he’s been impressive in the clarity he’s spoken with as well as what he believes he can bring to the Cowboys.

“Just as importantly, Todd is a believer in Dean’s coaching ability and we’re extremely excited to have two of the best young coaches in the game at our club.”
