Alex Johnston, a South Sydney Rabbitohs try-scoring machine. An 11th career hat trick, try 150 of his career, and a win over the Gold Coast Titans.
It did not get much sweeter for the Rabbitohs as they maintained their top eight spot with a 30-16 over the Titans, who continue to languish near the bottom.
It did not take long for Johnston to get involved in the action when Cody Walker took the line on, dummied, and then floated a ball over the top for Johnston’s first.
Not resting on their laurels early on, the Titans would hit back quickly via Greg Marzhew.
The powerful winger steamrolled Jaxson Paulo and barged over to score.
Eager to make amends, Paulo hit back in the best possible fashion for a winger; scoring a try.
He soared highest to take a crossfield bomb from Lachlan Ilias, coming down with the ball to score the try.
A near identical play almost came off at the back end of the first half but it would be the Bunnies heading into the sheds at 12-4.
Another slick raid down Johnston’s side saw the winger grab his second, as Walker and Campbell Graham combined for try 149 for Johnston.
One of the Titans’ best in recent weeks has been Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and despite playing Origin just a few days before, he again carried the Titans outfit.
This was epitomised by his hard run to take a dummy half pass from Tanah Boyd and bustle over to score.
As much as they tried to, the lack of sustained possession or momentum continued to cost the Titans.
The Rabbitohs would then put the first nail in the coffin when Damien Cook darted out of dummy half and found Taane Milne running a nice line to score.
The second came when Walker and Johnston combined yet again, bringing up try 150 in his career.
Fa’asuamaleaui would grab a second with another spirited effort, this time finding himself out on the wing but it was not enough and the Titans fell short.
