For the first time in their history, the Fijian women’s rugby league side – the Fiji Bulikula – will play at a Rugby League World Cup after winning the World Series final.

Playing in Brampton, Ontario, the Fijians overcame a tough and tenacious Nigerian side to win 62-4 and cement their spot.

Cronulla Sharks utility back Cassie Staples was the star with four tries and she was supported by recently released Newcastle Knights prop Leilani Ahsam who scored a double.

The Fijian side were potent on the left and the right, showcasing some nice attack to cut through the Nigerian defence.

For many years, the Fijian rugby league have placed emphasis and value on development programs to help their team grow and develop.

It paid off and the victory had head coach Joe Dakuitoga choking up, showing just how much it means to him.

“As I have said before, we want to qualify for this World Cup … I am so emotional, it has been a journey for the past few years and to be here and to qualify for the World Cup I can’t believe it,” Dakuitoga said.

“For us it is a big achievement. We started this program in 2019, then it stopped for a while (because of COVID) and it started again in 2023.

“To be here in 2025 and to qualify for the World Cup it is a big boost for the sport of women’s rugby league in Fiji and I think all over for the world.”

One player who has been involved through the trials and tribulations is Staples and after her superstar effort, she praised the Fijian development and her opponents in the World Series.

“I am a bit lost for words but incredibly proud of the group we have got today and where the program is heading in Fiji,” Staples said.

“Nigeria were extremely physical so they gave us a run for our money in terms of physicality out on the field.

“They are not a light side, and I look forward to the growth of their program as well and the development of rugby league in their country.”

Staples also expressed just how proud she was of her players for their efforts to qualify for their first ever World Cup.

“I can’t be any more prouder of the girls who are here today and the nations who have taken part in this World Series,” Staples continued.

“I think it is a credit and a statement to the growth of the game across the globe.”
