In perhaps the biggest transfer shock ahead of the 2024 NRLW season, the North Queensland Cowboys have pulled off a huge signing, adding Jakiya Whitfield on a three-year deal.

Whitfield was a breakout star for the Tigers in 2023, finishing with the most tackle busts in the NRLW as well as being named NRLW winger of the year at the Dally M’s.

Whitfield also impressed during the PMXIII game and her form across the season has been rewarded with a call up to the Jillaroos.

After the Cowboys side lacked potency out of their backs last season, adding Whitfield is a boost for a side that will hope to start games on the front foot with her power running game.

“This is exciting for the Cowboys,” Cowboys NRLW Head Coach Ben Jeffries said.

“To attract a player of Jakiya’s qualities on and off the field proves to us we’re heading in the right direction as a club.”

As she gets better and better, it is perhaps merely a formality before Whitfield establishes herself as a premium NRLW winger and the Cowboys want to help her achieve that.

“Jakiya is highly competitive with fantastic speed and agility,” Jeffries continued.

“She also embraces being out in the community which is important to us here at the Cowboys.

“Jakiya wants to become one of the best outside backs in the NRLW and will immediately come in and compete with our current group in the centre and fullback positions.”
