In what has been a turbulent season for the Newcastle Knights in more ways than one, head coach Adam O’Brien and the club have agreed to mutually part ways.
O’Brien has officially been released from the remaining two years of his NRL contract but will see out the season.
Since being appointed at the Knights in 2020, O’Brien has coached the side in 142 NRL games to date and there have been highs and lows but he is grateful for the chance to have coached the club.
“It has been a wonderful privilege to coach this amazing club,” said O’Brien.
“My immediate feeling is gratitude and pride; it has been an honour to coach the Knights.
Newcastle Knights CEO Phil Gardner lauded O’Brien as he looked back on the finals appearances the Knights were able to make during his tenure.
“I would like to thank Adam for his hard work and dedication to our club,” said Gardner.
“Under his leadership, the Knights returned to playing finals football for the first time since 2013, for 4 out of his 6 years in charge.”
