Fresh off her grand final victory with the Brisbane Broncos, Gayle Broughton will depart the club and return home to the NRLW New Zealand Warriors side after signing a two-year deal.
The rumours were abound that Broughton was set for a change of clubs and the move is now confirmed as the 29-year-old playmaker now dons her third NRLW club jersey.
A rugby sevens superstar with gold and silver medals to her name across her career, Broughton’s NRLW career began back in 2022 when she first played for the Parramatta Eels.
With the Warriors after further experience to solidify their squad, the addition of Broughton to the halves is one that pleases head coach Ron Griffiths.
“Gayle is a wonderful acquisition for our club, a person of great character,” said Griffiths.
“Equally adept with run, pass and kick options, this makes her a constant threat.
“Having completed her fourth NRLW season and played in her second grand final and won it, Gayle’s experience and steady hand is the key addition to our team from next season.”
For many players, returning home to be with family is a key factor and for Broughton, that was the case.
“(The decision) was based around my son. My partner’s wh?nau as well, they’re all back in New Zealand,” Broughton said.
“If there’s one thing I’ve learnt since becoming a parent… there’s always two of you. Some things are just bigger than footy and especially when it comes to your children.
“I’ll do anything for my son. I’d move heaven and earth for him.
“If that means moving back home to make sure that we’ve got more support, then I’ll jump on the first plane there. I’m excited to get back to New Zealand.”
