The Parramatta Eels have gone bang in the player market for one of the game’s leading front-rowers, adding Spencer Leniu for four years from the 2027 season.
Leniu, fresh off a premiership victory with the Sydney Roosters, was granted an early release from his contract to sign the deal with the Eels prior to the World Cup.
Known as a firebrand, Leniu spent three seasons with the Roosters and was praised by his now former coach in Trent Robinson.
“Spencer has brought a lot to our group over the last three years, both through the way he plays and the energy and personality he brings every day,” Robinson said.
“He came to the Roosters wanting to challenge himself and continue to grow, and we’ve seen him develop not only as a player, but as a leader within our group.
“He brings an intensity and competitiveness to everything he does, and he challenges the people around him to be better.”
Despite his departure, Leniu says he will carry many good memories that he made during his time with the Roosters.
“I’ve loved my time at the Roosters and I’ll always be grateful for the opportunity to have been part of this Club,” Leniu said.
“I came here wanting to challenge myself and grow as a player and as a person, and I feel like I’ve done that.
“I’ve learnt a lot from Robbo and the coaches, and I’ve been lucky to play alongside a great group of boys who have become my brothers.”
Still only 26, Leniu has four premierships to his name (three with Penrith and one with the Roosters) and has forged a reputation as an explosive and powerful presence, something the Eels forward pack desperately lacked.
Leniu will join the Eels later this year when he finishes up World Cup duties with Samoa but General Manager of Football Mark O’Neill is pleased to have his quality on board.
“We’re thrilled to have Spencer join the Parramatta Eels and become part of what we’re building at this Club,” O’Neill said.
“He’s one of the elite middle forwards in the game and has consistently performed on the biggest stages throughout his career.
“We’re excited to welcome Spencer and his family into the Eels community. We know he’ll make a tremendous contribution both on and off the field, and we can’t wait to see him in Blue and Gold.”
