Joe Chan started with a bang at the Melbourne Storm but as they undergo a changing of the guard, his spot was in doubt, thus prompting a surprise move to the North Queensland Cowboys.
The Storm have released Chan from his contract early as he takes up a deal with the Cowboys until the end of the 2028 season.
Chan, who debuted for the Storm in 2023, played in 47 NRL games for the club and was part of the first father-son duo to represent the club after his father Alex played previously for the club.
Storm General Manager of Football Frank Ponissi praised Chan for his efforts and gave him his well wishes.
“Joey has been a valuable member of our NRL squad over the past four years and has worked hard for his opportunities,” Ponissi said.
“He’s a versatile player who has played his role for the team on numerous occasions.
“We’re thankful for Joey’s contribution to Storm and wish him the best with his move to Townsville next season.”
With his new club excited to have him from next season, Cowboys Recruitment Manager Clint Zammit outlined the key attributes Chan has.
“Joe is a bigger body, he’s athletic and can play both edge and middle, which gives us something a little different to what we currently have in our forward pack,” Zammit said.
“He is coming out of a strong system and has already gained valuable experience, having played almost 50 NRL games for the Storm, in addition to a stint in the UK Super League.”
